A mandate to build.
I joined Alkem Laboratories through campus placement in 2023, as one of the first hires for a new medical-device subsidiary. The mandate extended from identifying an opportunity to establishing the foundations of a business.
The diversification work focused on orthopaedics and cardiovascular devices. I was Alkem’s representative on a McKinsey engagement and helped develop the market-entry thesis.
What makes this experience important in my career is the span of the work. The strategy was connected to technology transfer, acquisition work and the commercial, regulatory and operating foundations of the subsidiary.
My contribution, across the build.
My contribution spanned three connected areas:
- Market entry: helping develop the diversification thesis for orthopaedics and cardiovascular devices as Alkem’s representative on the engagement.
- Partnerships and transaction work: contributing to technology transfer with an international orthopaedics partner, domestic acquisition work and diligence on a European structural-heart asset.
- Operating foundations: helping establish the commercial, regulatory and operating spine of the new subsidiary.
In January 2025, I moved into the Chief of Staff role to the CEO, with work connecting board-level intent to operating cadence.
Connecting the thesis to the doing.
My earlier work was in UX. The questions there often began with a person, a workflow and a point of friction. Here, the scale was different: a market-entry thesis had to connect with the people and systems required to operate a business.
Looking back, that connection is the most useful way for me to explain the experience. Strategy and execution were part of the same mandate. The work crossed analytical, commercial, regulatory and organisational boundaries.
The scale of the problem changed. The design instinct stayed.
What I take forward.
I entered business after training and working as a designer. This experience gave me a larger canvas for the same interest: understanding how something works, identifying what needs to change and helping make that change real.
It is also why I want my work to stay close to implementation. A market thesis, a partnership and an operating process need to connect. The interesting work often lies in that connection.
A RELATED WAY OF THINKING
A strategy has users, too.
